From Sculptures to Drawings

From Sculptures to Drawings

How this shop came to be

In early 2024 I hit a wall. I was working on a large commission, frustrated with myself, the state of my art, and the cold, dark persistence of a Swedish winter. I had this urge to do something different and mix it up and make some art in a different way. That’s how this series of drawings came into fruition and in turn how this shop came to be!

Paper Sculpture representing an explosion of flowers with a key flower painted in gold with simulated drips of gold.

For those of you that are just stumbling upon my work for the first time, let me introduce myself. My name is Joey, I am an artist based in the Swedish countryside. I have been a working artist since getting out of college back in 2005 with a bachelors degree in fine arts, with an emphasis in painting. In 2007ish I started experimenting with and exhibiting paper sculptures. My addiction to cutting paper took hold and it has been my main medium for several years. In 2015 flowers started appearing in my work.

My sculptural work has been collected by people all over the globe and garnered attention in the cut paper realm of the art world. I think paper is an excellent medium and as funny as it sounds, I get giddy when it comes time to pull out the exact knives and glue to concoct something new. The sculptures I make take weeks to months to complete and that means they are expensive.

The drawings!
In early 2024 I started tinkering with a drawing program on the iPad. Despite years of trying to make presentable work in a digital format, I couldn’t. This time around something clicked! Maybe it was finding the right “brush” at the start of drawing Red Chrysanthemum, but I found a groove.

As the dark days of winter were subsiding I kept drawing and ended up with a collection. I set out to make a calendar for 2025 with this series. As I started that project it became apparent that I couldn’t have twelve drawings that I were up to snuff and in time for production.

... was born out of a pivot, but I think it will become something more than that.

The shop is simple in it’s conceit: share depictions of flowers that are meant to adorn walls and carry the meaning you wish to instill in them. It was put together to provide my art at an accessible price point while maintaining high quality output.

The prints start at $40 and go up to $100. Sales from this little “flower shop” further support my making and being able to provide for the dog and myself.

The pitch:
Have a look around. There are currently  6 drawings varying in color schemes, available in museum quality prints in a range of sizes. If you find that any them resonate with you or think they would be the perfect gift for a loved one, I’ve done my best to make the purchase straight forward and easy.

Thanks for spending some time and supporting my work!

-Joey
