This tuft of petals felt very mandala like when I first started the drawing. This peony is in it’s prime, no longer balled up in a bulb, not yet wilting. The cobalt blue hue that I have been working with for the last several years felt appropriate for this drawing. The pattern of petals enshrining it are the peony itself in repeat, colored with a more subdued, less saturated blue. They seem to be both protecting the bloom in focus while accentuating it.
