I love peonies, I love green, and this drawing brings those two things together. I have used the reference image of this peony before, for a sculpture that I made last year that has yet to see the light of day. What drew me to this peony that once resided in my old apartment in Stockholm for a few weeks, is the way that the bloom is in its last days. The lower petals are heavy, outstretched, and appear to be battling gravity. Meanwhile the petals atop are starting to show their wear, many of them crumpling and contorting inward. I relished working out the varying textures present in this bloom.
